English to Speakers of Other Languages – English Language Learner (ELL) Endorsement

真人线上娱乐 English to Speakers of Other Languages endorsement is designed to prepare educators with the knowledge, strategies, resources, and experiences necessary to effectively support the academic and social-emotional growth of multilingual learners across diverse educational settings. 

Throughout the program, students will engage in rigorous coursework and practical experiences aimed at deepening their understanding of language acquisition, inclusive practices for language assessment and pedagogy, sheltered instruction, and ESOL leadership and program evaluation. Emphasizing hands-on learning experiences, our curriculum includes three field-embedded courses and a 8-10-week teaching practicum, in which students have the opportunities work directly with multilingual learners in K-12 classrooms and community-based organizations of their choice.

Endorsement Requirements

Coursework Requirement (20 credits)

  • B EDUC 441 Second Language Acquisition, Bilingual Education, and the Structure of English
  • B EDUC 442 Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment in ESOL
  • B EDUC 443 Practicum in ESOL
  • B EDUC 444 Leadership and Program Level Assessment in ESOL
Additional Course Requirements
  • Courses must be taken in sequence
  • Grades of 2.0 GPA or higher are required in all ESOL coursework

Practicum Experience Requirement (100 hours)

ESOL candidates are required to complete a 100-hour practicum in an ESOL classroom, mentored by a practicing teacher.

Practicum Details
  • Teacher candidates will be in their ESOL classroom placement a minimum of 3 days a week for approximately 8 weeks (not including district spring break week) during the UW quarter.
    • Number and days of the week may be determined by the schedule of a candidate’s assigned cooperating teacher. Cooperating teachers will work closely with the placement coordinator and the candidate to arrange a schedule to meet this requirement. 
  • Practicum will consist of a minimum of 100 hours working directly with multilingual learners who are receiving English language development services. Placement will be in a public school classroom identified by the School of Educational Studies placement coordinator. 
  • 真人线上娱乐s will be mentored by a certified ELL cooperating teacher and an SES field supervisor.

Endorsement Content Test Requirement

To be recommended for the ESOL endorsement, students are required to pass the Washington Educator Skills Test (WEST-E) English Language Learner test (051). 真人线上娱乐s are requested to take the WEST-E 051 before the end of their practicum. This test is required by the State of Washington and is designed to assess teacher candidates’ competencies outlined by the Professional Educator Standard Board in teaching multilingual learners.

What Teaching Positions Can I Pursue with the ESOL Endorsement?

With the ESOL endorsement added to your residency certificate, students can pursue ESOL-only teaching positions (such as a “pull-out” and/or “push-in” services teacher), or general education teaching positions (traditional or ESOL-inclusion classroom situations).

Candidates with the ESOL endorsement are highly qualified and, due to the shortage of ESOL-endorsed teachers in Washington State, they will be sought after whether or not they accept an ESOL-only teaching position.


Special Education Endorsement

真人线上娱乐 Inclusive Practice in Special Education endorsement (SPED) is designed to equip K12 teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary for supporting the positive academic and social-emotional development of children and youth with disabilities in inclusive classroom and school settings.

真人线上娱乐 endorsement structure facilitates professional learning through the movement from knowledge and skills acquisition to application via case based learning and practical experience. Areas of curricular focus include: a) foundations, b) assessment, c) planning, d) instruction, and e) communication and collaboration.

Practicum Experience Requirement (200 hours)

Special Education candidates are required to complete a 200-hour practicum in a special education classroom, mentored by a practicing teacher.

Practicum Details
  • Candidates will be in their SPED classroom placement 4 days a week for a total of 10 weeks (not including district spring break week) during the UW quarter.
    • Number and days of the week may be determined by a candidate’s assigned mentor teacher schedule. Mentor teachers will work closely with the placement coordinator to arrange a schedule to meet this requirement.
  • Practicum will consist of a minimum of 200 hours spread across the UW quarter.
  • Placement will be in a public school classroom identified by the School of Educational Studies placement coordinator.
  • 真人线上娱乐s will be mentored by a cooperating/mentor teacher and supervised by a university field instructor

Endorsement Content Test Requirement

To be recommended for the Special Education endorsement, students are required to pass the Washington Educator Skills Test (WEST-E) Special Education test (070).
