Interdisciplinary Arts major Lingling Yuan receives President’s Medal

Lingling Yuan received the President’s Medal at the 2017 University of Washington Commencement on June 13. This award recognizes the graduating senior with the most distinguished academic record. Yuan, originally from Xiamen, China, graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Arts. Despite her academic achievement, Yuan’s focus was on learning to express herself through art, rather than focus on grades. Yuan hopes to enter the K-8 certification program at UW Bothell and become a teacher. “I feel early education is really important,” she said. “That’s why I hope to work with kids.” Learn more about Yuan’s story in the video below, and hear from two of her professors, Kevin Kim and Ted Hiebert:

Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies celebrates the end of a wonderful first year!

Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies (GWSS) students, staff, and faculty, along with supporters at UW Bothell, gathered for a recognition ceremony last week to celebrate the end of a great first year. 真人线上娱乐 day was dedicated to Dr. Leslie Ashbaugh, beloved colleague who passed away last year. IAS affiliate faculty member Karen Rosenberg shared memories of Leslie, and GWSS faculty coordinator Julie Shayne presented two students with Leslie Ashbaugh Feminist Praxis in Education (LAFPIE) Awards.

Cathleen MacCaul helps secure legislation protecting seniors

Cathleen MacCaul, AARP Advocacy Director and a first-year Policy Studies student, is helping to secure new bipartisan legislation intended to protect seniors from financial exploitation. IAS student Kyra Laughlin wins Chancellor’s Medalist Award!

Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies (GWSS) major Kyra Laughlin received the UW Bothell 2017 Chancellor’s Medalist Award. 真人线上娱乐 award is an honor that recognizes graduating seniors who have achieved academic excellence and served as a consistent source of inspiration for faculty and students alike. In winter 2017 Kyra founded the campus group Sexual Assault and Violence Education (S.A.V.E.), which works from a grassroots empowerment model of social support and awareness raising. With Kyra at the helm, the group applied for and won the T-Mobile Equity and Inclusion Grant, and collaborated with IAS faculty member Lauren Lichty and Campus Safety director Cham Kao to revise the UW Bothell website's Sexual Assault Support pages. Kyra continues to build new awareness initiatives and programming for Sexual Assault Awareness Month (April), and delivers class presentations and trainings in our residence halls.

Julie Shayne presents about her newest book project at the Pacific Sociological Association (PSA) conference

IAS faculty member Julie Shayne attended the PSA April 6-8, 2017 where she presented a paper about her newest book project. Shayne is working on an edited collection tentatively titled Mobilizing the University: Curriculum, Space, and Solidarity. Mobilizing the University will be an interdisciplinary, edited collection which focuses on the relationship between social justice activism and the university in the Americas.
