Registering for Classes

Your registration date is based on student type (Continuing, Returning, etc…), as well as class (Freshman, Sophomore, etc…). Please see the Registration Add & Drop Course Periods web page for details.

In several situations your registration may be blocked. If you have a registration hold, there is a link from Web Registration where you can find out which office has placed the hold. Below are some of the more common reasons:

105-credit (5 quarter) rule

You are expected to declare a major by the time you have earned 105 credits and completed 5 quarters. If you have not done so, a hold will be placed on your registration. This hold can be cleared in one of two ways: 1) by declaring your major, or 2) receiving a premajor extension. A premajor extension may be granted by an academic adviser or academic advising office upon a direct request from you. You will likely be granted a premajor extension if it is clear that you have a major in mind and that you are within one or two quarters of being able to declare that major. If the major is capacity-constrained, your plan must also include a non-capacity-constrained alternative major that you are within one or two quarters of being able to declare.

165-credit (11 quarter) rule

Most degree programs will place a hold on your registration when you complete 165 credits and 11 quarters IF you have not filed an application to graduate or made other arrangements with your major department. Make sure you’re in contact with your academic adviser before you get to this point.

Immunization

All enrolled matriculated students, and all students living in UW residence halls or single-student apartments, are required to provide proof of measles (rubeola) immunity. You are not allowed to register for any classes until Hall Health Primary Care Center confirms that this has been satisfied.

Finances

If you owe money to the UW for tuition, late registration fees, etc., your registration will usually be blocked until the situation is resolved.

Return your library materials to remove holds due to library fines.

Some departments will block your registration if you have neglected to return a lab key or other equipment.

All undergraduate students enrolled at one UW campus may register for courses at another UW campus on a space-available basis, starting on the first day of Registration Period 2 for Autumn, Winter and Spring quarters. In Summer quarter, cross-campus enrollment is allowed in Period 1 as well.

Once admitted, first-year students must complete 25 credits on their home campus before enrolling in courses on other UW campuses. All students with class standing from sophomore to post-baccalaureate must complete 15 credits on their home campus before cross-enrolling.

For additional information, see the Cross-Campus Registration Policy web page.

真人线上娱乐 Office of the Registrar cannot register you for a closed class. You will need to wait until a seat becomes available. In some instances, the instructor may allow additional students to register beyond the normal capacity of the class. Please note this is at the discretion of the instructor/department. If you receive permission to add a closed class, please work with your academic advisor.

Petitions

If you make a change to your schedule that results in a lower tuition charge after the 7th calendar day of the quarter, you are charged a tuition forfeiture fee. This also applies if you withdraw completely from all of your courses.

You are charged one-half of the tuition reduction (50% forfeiture) for classes dropped from the 8th through the 30th calendar day of the quarter during Autumn, Winter and Spring quarters or from the 8th to the 21st calendar day of Summer quarter. If you drop from one tuition rate to another such as dropping below full-time or dropping from over 18 credits to below the 18 credit surcharge threshold, you will be charged the tuition rate for the number of credits that you are now taking, plus one-half of the difference between full-time tuition and your new rate.

Forfeitures may be cancelled for specific reasons (see the list of Suggested Supporting Materials for guidelines).

WA State Residency

A student’s initial residence classification is set during the admissions process, based upon information provided on the student’s admission application. Often, residency is more than simply being present in the state. If a student is classified as a non-resident when they are admitted and believes that they qualify as a resident for tuition purposes, they must file a residency application with the Office of the Registrar for verification.

Please refer to the Residency Policy web page for additional information, along with instructions for applying for residency (if applicable).
